I would like to share my thoughts on Amendment One, which will affect the legal relationship of all married couples in NC if passed. It states that a "marriage between one man and one woman is the only legal domestic relationship recognized by the state of North Carolina." This will have a devasting impact on unmarried victims of domestic violence, whether they are gay or straight.
In Moore County we estimate that as many as half of the domestice violence victims are NOT married to their perpetrator. The result, if Amendment One is passed, would mean that unmarried domestic violence victims (since their relationship cannot be legally recognized by the state) would not be able to get protective orders, and those domestic violence protective orders already in place will likely be declared invalid. If passed, Amendment One would pose a substanstial threat to the safety of all persons, gay or straight, in our community.
Sincerely,
Anne Friesen
